My husband and I are going to try to do this since he is a Trump supporter, and I am a Kamala supporter. I am curious to see how it goes. I actively dislike Trump and it makes it hard for me to pay attention to what he is actually saying, and my husband has become quite entrenched in his political views this year especially, so we will see!

The mind wandering thing with content we don't like is so true, isn't it? Very curious to hear how your experiment will go, I really hope you do report back. Good luck!

We ended up not watching for very long- our daughter was stalling a bit at bedtime so it was 9:30 by the time she was in bed (she’d also fallen asleep on the way home from preK and was asleep until 7 so I was shooting for 9:15 bedtime). We watched a bit, and we did discuss how some of it was rehashing old issues instead of really answering new questions about their current plans. After about 20 minutes he said he thought he would rather watch it on his own time when he could rewatch the whole thing, and I started to get sleepy since I have had bad insomnia this week where I am up for the day at 3/4 in the morning. Our experiment ultimately didn’t involve watching all that much so I wonder how it would go if we really watched the whole thing together.

Laura, thanks for sharing this! Isn't that classic that life got in the way (the sleep stuff is rough!). You can try for the whole debate if there's another, but honestly, it's pretty cool that you and your husband can chat about some of the similarities in what you saw--like the rehashing of old issues (I agree!!). Also, how both have a tendency to not offer an answer to the question asked!

Thank you for this Yael! It really did help me actually tolerate watching the debate last night. I usually get too overwhelmed by strong emotion but your framing has really helped me work on that open mind thing :)
